Meet Madeleine
My experience and qualifications

I am an experienced counsellor offering private counselling in York and online across the UK for young adults, university students, autistic adults and LGBTQ+ clients.

I work with people experiencing anxiety, low mood, panic, low self-confidence and low self-esteem. I also support clients with relationship difficulties, family issues, friendship challenges and life transitions such as leaving home, starting work or finishing university.

I understand that starting counselling can feel difficult. You may be worried about being judged or concerned that someone will not fully understand your experiences. I aim to offer a calm and supportive space where you can talk openly and feel listened to. My aim is to offer you a helpful conversation, whether this looks like plenty of space for you to talk openly, lots of interaction from me or something in between.

I am a BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) accredited counsellor listed on the BACP register of therapists. I work in line with the BACP Ethical Framework, which places your wellbeing at the centre of the counselling work we do together.

I have been working as a counsellor for seven years and specialise in supporting young adults aged 18-40. I have a strong understanding of the emotional, relational and social pressures that can affect this stage of life.

Alongside my private practice, I work at the University of York as a Mental Health Practitioner, providing counselling and mental health support to students at all levels of study. My experience working within university mental health services means I am well placed to support university students looking for private counselling in York or online.

I hold a Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling awarded by CPCAB (Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body). In line with my BACP accreditation requirements, I undertake a minimum of 30 hours of Continuing Professional Development each year.

I am fully insured, hold an enhanced DBS certificate and am registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).

I also hold MA (2002) and BA (2000) degrees from the University of Sheffield. Before training as a counsellor, I worked in public and academic libraries in a range of roles managing staff and enquiry desks, buying books and resources and running a range of activities.
