Autism Counselling in York for Autistic Adults
I offer autism counselling in York for autistic adults, as well as people who are exploring whether they may be autistic or are currently waiting for assessment. I also work with neurodivergent people who want space to understand their experiences, identity and needs. I provide a calm, confidential and supportive space where you can talk about whatever is important to you, at your own pace.

Alongside the same issues many people bring to counselling, as an autistic client you may also be navigating differences in communication, sensory sensitivities, social situations, autistic burnout, masking, executive functioning differences, or the transition into adulthood, education or work. You may be also adjusting to a recent autism diagnosis, exploring what autism means for your identity, or making sense of late diagnosis. We can also focus on any other concerns you want to bring such as anxiety, low mood, relationships, work or study.

My approach

I am a person-centred counsellor. This means the focus is on your experience and what feels important to you, rather than trying to fit you into a particular way of thinking or communicating. You will not be expected to mask, perform, or present yourself in a certain way.

The aim is to support you to understand yourself more clearly, including how autism or neurodivergence may shape your experiences, so you can make choices that feel right for you. Sessions move at your pace, and there is no pressure to talk about anything before you are ready.

Tailoring counselling to you

Some autistic clients prefer a more structured approach. Sessions can be adapted to suit your needs.
For example:

-
You can bring notes or a list of topics you want to talk about
-
I can use more direct questions or prompts if that feels easier
-
Eye contact is not expected or required
-
If silence feels uncomfortable, I can talk through it
-
If it helps, you can use a fidget toy, draw, crochet, knit, or keep your hands busy during sessions
We can also talk about sensory needs and anything that would make the space more comfortable for you.
I am also listed on the National Autistic Society Autism Services Directory, which provides information and support for autistic people and their families.
