Why do therapy fees vary so much?

You may have noticed that the cost of counselling varies significantly depending on which counsellor you choose. Typically in York (UK), a session can cost anywhere from £30 to £100+. But why are there such big differences in fees? There are several possible reasons. Firstly, location plays a role. Counsellors who work from an office in the city centre or on a business park like Clifton Moor often charge more to cover room rental costs. Counsellors who work from home, without the same overheads, may charge less. Online sessions can also be more affordable for similar reasons — though not always. The length of the session is another factor. A one-hour session usually costs more than a 50-minute session, and anything longer will typically cost more again. Experience and qualifications matter too. Experienced and accredited counsellors often charge more than newly qualified practitioners. Those with specialised or in-demand training — such as EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) — may also have higher fees. Finally, when the session takes place can affect pricing. Some counsellors charge higher rates for peak times, such as evenings or weekends, due to increased demand.
