Weekly, Fortnightly, Monthly... How Often Should I Have Counselling?

Most counsellors offer the option to attend sessions weekly or fortnightly. Some may also provide monthly or "as and when" sessions. So, what are the pros and cons of these different time gaps between sessions? Weekly sessions are often a good choice at the beginning of counselling. They help build momentum, establish a strong therapeutic relationship, and support meaningful progress. Weekly sessions are particularly helpful if you're working through ongoing or complex issues. After the initial stages, whether you choose weekly or fortnightly sessions will depend on your finances, other commitments, and how much time you prefer between sessions to process and apply what you've discussed. Monthly sessions may work for you option once you feel you’ve resolved your main concerns and are seeking a space for reflection. However, if you’re dealing with a lot, monthly sessions may not provide enough support. If you have a fixed budget for counselling, it might seem logical to spread out your sessions. However, concentrated sessions generally work better for most people. Monthly sessions often require a lot of time just to catch up, leaving less space for deeper therapeutic work.
