Student Counselling in York

If you are a university student looking for private counselling in York,
including at the University of York or York St John University, you are in
the right place.

I am an experienced university counsellor at the University of York,
working within the student mental health service (Open Door),
supporting university students. I have worked in higher education
for over 12 years and in student mental health for 6 years.

I specialise in supporting university students in York experiencing
anxiety, stress, low mood, and feeling overwhelmed during their studies.
I also work with issues around confidence, motivation, and feeling stuck
or unsure about direction at university.

I understand how university life can feel both exciting and overwhelming, with academic demands, deadlines, and personal change all affecting mental health and wellbeing. Having someone you can talk with who is supportive, interested, and outside your university system can help when things feel uncertain or overwhelming. Counselling offers space to think things through more clearly, especially when you are managing pressure, change, or decisions about your future.
I can offer:

-
A prompt start, as I understand the importance of not waiting too long for support
-
Flexible scheduling, including around vacation periods and changing academic or work timetables
-
In-person sessions in a calm counselling room in Heworth, York, within walking distance of the city centre
-
Free parking and secure bicycle storage

I work with a wide range of student concerns, including:

-
Academic stress, exam pressure, procrastination, perfectionism, and feeling overwhelmed or not good enough
-
Adjusting to university life, including independence, living away from home, and transitions in or out of university
-
Relationship difficulties at university, including family, friendships, partners, and housemates
-
Identity, confidence, anxiety, and low mood during studies
-
Support for LGBTQ+ and autistic students navigating university life, relationships, and academic demands

I work with students including:

-
College students aged 18+, university applicants, and students on gap years
-
Undergraduate and foundation year students
-
Postgraduate students, including Masters and PhD candidates
-
International and visiting students studying in the UK
-
Mature students returning to education or studying alongside work and family life
-
Students on placement, interruption of study, deferral, or those who have recently left or graduated

Alongside student-specific work, I also support longer-standing difficulties such as anxiety, depression, loneliness, and low self-esteem.
